Our Favorite iPod Touch Apps

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is February 2nd, 2011, I’m Alex, and I’m here to discuss with you the top ten iPhone and iPod Touch apps, based on our experience with the iPod touch.

The iPod Touch: a revolutionary electronic that has changed the face of the mp3 player industry forever, solely because of little inventions called applications. Applications are programs within the software of the iTouch and iPhone that let you play games, stay up to date with news, and even lets you play with a virtual Zippo lighter.

As for me, I have an iPod Touch. I just got it last April, and let me say this: it is easily the best $200 I’ve spent in my life. Completely worth the money. I’ve wanted an iPhone ever since its release, but still have yet to get one. So, for those of you like me who have just an iPod touch and NOT the iPhone just yet, this post is for you. A post completely about iPod Touch apps, not iPhone apps.  Apps that don’t necessarily require wifi or a camera to use. The apps that we will list won’t be in a particular order, but just by the order of which they appear on our iPod that we’re currently looking at.

1. Facebook for iPhone – Free

Who doesn’t like the popular social networking site, Facebook? Practically no one. And in that case, no one is going to dislike this Facebook for iPhone app. This app allows to access to everything you would normally have access to if you were to log onto Facebook on an actual computer. You can add photos, update your status, comment on various items, and even add more friends. This app is a definite must-have for those who like to have access to Facebook whenever they possibly can. However, this app does require internet access in order to operate.

2. Doodle Jump – $0.99

I hope to God that you guys have heard of Doodle Jump. It is probably one of the most popular iPod Touch/iPhone games you could possibly buy. The game is pretty simple – don’t fall. Doodle, the main character, is jumping on ledges up and up and up. The goal is to continue going as far as possible, without falling or hitting monsters. Sounds easy, right? Not quite. Some ledges move side to side, some move up and down, some can even be moved by you. Doodle Jump does not require internet connection, unless you want to post your scores to social networking sites like Facebook. This app is definitely worth the money, it’s a classic time-waster and it’s highly addicting.

3. The Daily Puppy – Free

Puppies. Who does not love puppies? They are cute little animals who just make you want to go, “Aww!” Well, this app allows you to get your daily recommended amount of cuteness. It shows a picture of an adorable puppy each day. It also has a tab on it that allows you to see full-grown dogs as well. There is even an option to save puppies in a “Favorites” folder for later use. The Daily Puppy app requires internet connection in order to operate. This app is definitely one of our personal favorites for use during a bad day.

4. FX Photo Studio – $1.99

Photo editing is one of the most popular trends to do at this time. Adding effects, cropping, and editing the sun’s exposure to a picture can all be done with this nifty little app. There’s not much to be said about this app with the exception that you can edit any picture, and save it to your photo album, or you can even post it on Facebook if you’d like. While saving your photo, this app even displays a nice fun fact for you to read while you wait. Unless you are posting your finished picture to an online resource, this app does not require internet connection at all; therefore, you can edit pictures anywhere you go!

5. Charmed – $2.99

Charmed is like the classic Bejeweled game that we all know and love, with some unexpected twists. No more moves? Okay, the entire board will be refreshed within seconds. Empty spaces on the grid? Alright, well just give your iPod a turn to its side and voila! More jewels fill the screen. This game is highly addictive and once you start playing, you won’t want to stop! In my personal experience, I ended up beating the game, and starting completely over because of how much fun it was. This game never gets old, and is a great game to play while traveling, seeing how it requires absolutely no wifi!

6. Dark Nebula, Episode 1 & 2 – $0.99 each

This game has to be my personal favorite. In this game, you go to a whole another world. Similar to Labyrinth, in this game you try to get collect the capsules and get to the goal in under a time limit. You are scored by the number of capsules you collect and your time that you receive. This game is the most addictive game I have ever played, and I recommend buying both episodes of it. They are both worth the money. These apps don’t require an internet connection unless you wish to post your scores to Facebook or another online source.

7. Lightsaber Unleashed – Free

This app is a must for those who love Star Wars. It allows you to have a lightsaber on your iPod. This app really has no other use than to be able to go around, swinging your iPod at people, while it makes super awesome lightsaber noises. And come on, who wouldn’t love that?

8. Harry Potter Spells – $2.99

Harry Potter is the boy wizard phenomenon of the century. Everyone who has ever picked up a book in their life has heard of Harry Potter. If you haven’t, well then you’re a square, and you’re really missing out. Apart from the amazing book series, this app gives you the ability to basically give yourself a wand and cast spells as you please, as if you have attended Hogwarts. Alternate spell packs are available for download within the app, giving extra spells within each pack. One also includes the Death Eater skin for the app, which, as you can see below, is actually pretty snazzy. This app doesn’t require internet connection unless you wish to purchase the in-app spell packs for an additional $0.99 each.

9. Monopoly – $2.99

The classic Parker Brothers board game is back in an application format for the iPhone and iPod touch! Monopoly is one of the most popular board games in the entire world! This game is about becoming the richest from nothing. It’s a property-dealing game that makes you feel like the top of the top. This app is perfect for Monopoly lovers, especially ones who love to play while on the go. This app requires no internet connection whatsoever, and in this app, you can play the game with several different boards! This app is really incredible and worth the money.

10. Air Hockey – $0.99

The iPhone app, Air Hockey, allows users to play air hockey on their devices. This app gives an aerial view of an air hockey, in which you hit the puck in order to score against your opponent. This game is an awesome game to play. It’s a lot of fun, and it even includes several difficulties of play. You even have the option to play with two pucks! This game is a definite must-have. It’s amazing to play, and even more amazing to have.

We really hope that everyone has enjoyed reading about these apps that we chose. If you have any suggestions about more apps, please comment so we could try them out!
