Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is March 4th, 2008, I’m Nicole, and I am here to talk about the Russian Presidential Election which occurred on March 2nd.
Two days ago Russia “elected” a new president, Dmitry Medvedev. Many people call him “Putin’s Puppet” because former president, Vladimir Putin “hand-picked” him to be the new president, and many think that Vladimir Putin will control him while he is in office.
But with the new presidency, came protesters. Some were lighting flares and shouting, “Your election is a farce!”
Before the election happened, candidates ran into some “obstacles”.
While Mr. Vladimir Putin was in office, some of the candidates were forbidden to use meeting places to get votes. While one was accused of forging 62,000 signatures out of the 2,000,000 needed to run.
“I do not think it is right that President Vladimir Putin did what he did. He accused people of forging 62,000 signatures! I mean, how would you forge that many signatures? You would have to think of a different name and write it differently than the others! That would take a long time!” says Amber, a writer at the Modern Typewriter.
“I think that Vladimir Putin was wrong, yes, but I don’t think Russia really cares. After Boris Yeltsin as president, he brought up the economy, which made everyone happy. Do they really respect him, or do they just fear him, to where they have to respect him?” says Royce, another writer.
What do you think? Do you think President Medvedev will make a good president? Leave us a comment to share your opinion!
