A New European Country….Kosovo!

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is February  19th, 2008, I’m  Rochester, and I am here to announce a new country on the Balkan Peninsula…Kosovo!

Only two days old, Kosovo has made many headlines throughout the world, announcing its independence. It used to be a part of Yugoslavia, a country part of the Balkan Peninsula.

Yugoslavia was originally made up of  about 7 regions. The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vojvodina made up the original Yugoslavia. These are current countries or regions.

After the independence,  many celebrated. Fireworks, celebratory gunfire, and parties erupted.

But the celebrating didn’t last long.

The first sign of trouble was when two hand grenades were thrown at international community buildings. One exploded, while the other failed to. Many people also protested, and some protesters, thought to be youth gangs, attacked a McDonald’s fast food place.

What do you think about the new country? Do you think that Kosovo can stand on its own? Leave us a comment to express your opinion!

Remember, I’m Rochester, and this is the Modern Typewriter, OUT!
