Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily or are just some fun topics! Today is November 23rd, 2007, I’m Melanie, and I am here to discuss the topic of the European Union.
The European Union (EU) is a group of countries that banded together to help one another when in need. They made it possible that instead of each individual country having their own currency (money) that all of the EU countries made one currency, the Euro. And if your address is in an EU country, that you can travel freely to every other EU country without hassle.
It sounds like a good idea, right?
Well, the other side of the story is that if you were in the EU, then you would have to follow the laws for the EU. Recently, a rule stating for fishermen in the EU weren’t allowed to fish for anything but prawn. The EU did not want the other fish to be extinct. But if you weren’t in the EU, you had all of the rights to fish for anything, and they couldn’t do anything about it. Norway, purposely chose not to be an EU country because fishing is very important to their economy. If their fishing rights were taken away, their economy would be awful.
So would joining the EU be a good idea, or would it end in a bad result?
Remember, I’m Melanie, and this is the Modern Typewriter, OUT!
