The Eiffel Tower

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is January 29th, 2008, I’m Jason, and I am here to talk about the Eiffel Tower, in France.

One of the most recognizeable structures in the world, the Eiffel Tower stands in Paris, France. Constructed in 1887-1889, Gustave Eiffel built this magnificent tower.

Since its construction, over 100,000,000 people have visited the Parisian pillar. And more intend to come in the new year of 2008. This makes the Eiffel Tower the most paid/visited monument in the world.

During the World War 2 years, Adolf Hitler conquered Paris. The French cut the ropes to the top, so Hitler and some Nazis had to manually climb to the top to hang the Swastika, the Nazi symbol. Soon, the flag blew away and the Nazis replaced the flag with a smaller one.

Have you ever been to the Eiffel Tower? Do you want to go? Leave a comment to express your opinion!

Holocaust Memorial Day

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is January 27th, 2008, I’m Rochester, and I am here to talk about Holocaust Memorial Day here at the Modern Typewriter, and many other places around the world.

January 27th marks the day for remembering the tragic deaths of 6,000,000 Jews, and many other races. During World War 2, the Nazis terrorized the Jews and sent them away to Concentration Camps.

Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazis. Since Concentration Camps were filling up quickly, he came up with “the final solution”, which were Death Camps.

Hitler became leader after a vote. He won by only one or two votes. How would history be changed if those votes didn’t vote for him?

“Although I am a Catholic, I really am sad about what happened. It was a terrible time. I cannot believe that my race would such to another race.” says Anna, a writer here at the Modern Typewriter.

This day is marked as Holocaust Memorial Day for one reason. January 27th was the day the Allies liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau Death Camp.

We hope everyone remembers the horrible days of the Holocaust that more than 8,000,000 people were killed by the Nazis.

A Memorial For A Bear?

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topic! Today is January 26th, 2008, I’m Stephanie, and I am here to discuss a current event, a memorial for a bear that fought in World War 2.

On the BBC News website, we found an article that explains a current event in Scotland. A campaign has launched for whether or not they make a memorial for “Soldier Bear” as the soldiers called him.

The article is located here.

His name was Voytek, and yes, he was a bear.  He was found in the middle east by Polish troops and was taken in, in 1943. Then, he became a mascot for Polish troops.

Why do you think that this bear was very important to the Polish troops, other than helping them out?

So we thought about many new additions to add to the Modern Typewriter, news pages, pictures, categories. But one of our own writers came up with an idea that he thought you guys would like a lot.

Royce, one of of very own writers came up with an idea to make a page especially for videos. You know cool videos like Animusic.

“I think it is the perfect thing that the Modern Typewriter needs. I mean, who doesn’t like to watch a good video!” says Stephanie, another writer at the Modern Typewriter.

“Our videos will be on topics that are somewhat random, but they are going to be liked. You will never know what the next  video will be until it is posted!” says Rochester, another writer.

The page fore videos will officially be up and running tomorrow, January 24th, 2008. It might open early tonight, so keep an eye out.

High School Musical 2

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, o rare just some fun topics! Today is January 19th, 2008, I’m Stephanie, and I am here to talk about High School Musical 2.

High School Musical 2, the sequel to High School Musical, was the most watched television program in U.S. history, at the time of its release. With 17.2 million viewers in the United States alone, I bet you can agree that it was very popular.

Recently, just yesterday, Disney Channel had its “High School Musical 2: Around The World” Event in London, but shown on television. It showed an 8-hour marathon of “Hannah Montana” then at 8:00pm, the movie came on. And during the marathon, it showed music videos of the songs from the movie, played by people from different countries in their language.

“I saw a video from France. I really liked it, because it showed my favorite song, Bet On It, in French.” says a High School Musical fan.

So what do you think? Do you like the movie? Leave us a comment to express your opinion!

The Orphan Train

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is January 18th, 2008, I’m Jason, and I am here to talk about the Orphan Train.

The Orphan Train was a train that transported orphans to the mid-west for adoption from 1854-1929. About 200,000 children were adopted during this time.

Two charity organizations were determined to help the homeless children in large cities like New York City. So they developed these trains that would transport the children to places in the west for families to adopt children for farms and such. Soon, these trains were known as the “Orphan Trains.”

Some people disbelieved in this. Some people thought it as a form of slavery. They thought that since the children were sent out west to farms to work, that this was a form of slavery. Some was and some wasn’t. Some children would have been better off homeless.  Some were mistreated, like abused.

There is now a museum for the Orphan Trains. The National Orphan Train Museum and Research Center is located in Concordia, Kansas.

If you were homeless, and the Orphan Train stopped at your city, would you get on? Leave us a comment to express your opinion!

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is January 16th, 2008, I’m Rochester, and I am here to speak about a snow sculpture festival in China.

Obviously snow has fallen in Heilongjiang Province, China. Or else they wouldn’t be having a snow sculpture festival. We found this morning on the CBBC home page a series of pictures that show some of the beautiful sculptures and artists. Here is the link.

How long do you think it would take them to make the first sculpture? Leave us a comment and express your thinking!

Snow Finally Falls After 100 Years!

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is January 14th, 2008, I’m Anna, and I am here to talk about the current event of snow falling in Baghdad, Iraq for the first time in a century.

Snow delighted the people of Iraq on Friday, January 11th, 2008. The people think it is a sign of peace.

“A few minutes ago, I was covered with snowflakes. In my hair, on my shoulders. I invite all people to enjoy peace. Because snow means peace.” says Iraqi Hassan Zahar. Quote taken from Reuters.

Why would the Iraqis first think of peace when the snow fell? Would you want to think peace was near? Leave us a comment to express your opinion!

A Cat Aboard A Ship

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is January 10th, 2008, I’m Stephanie, and I am here to discuss the topic of a cat on board a ship.

The idea of cats on board ships started in Ancient Times. They were there for a multiple of reasons, but the most important was that there was probably rats and mice aboard the ship. And as we all know, cats like mice and rats. So the crew was afraid that the rats would damage the ship’s machinery, woodwork and other things.

Another reason was that cats were known as magical animals. They were thought to be intelligent and lucky on a ship’s journey.

Soon, cats were banned from Naval Ships because of hygiene purposes.

What do you think of cats? Should we keep them on Naval Ships, or no? Leave us a comment to express your opinion!

We Took A Vote!

Welcome to the Modern Typewriter, a daily blog to discuss topics that can’t be answered easily, or are just some fun topics! Today is January 9th, 2007, I’m Jason, and I am here to announce an announcement!

The Modern Typewriter team recently took a vote to whether or not we should go back to our old design. Out of 8 writers present, 6 out of 8 voted to go back to our old design.

“I think that this look resembles the Modern Typewriter best.” says Royce, a writer here at the Modern Typewriter.

“I disagree with the old look. I really liked the new design the very best. It actually looked like the writing came from a typewriter.” says Cody, another writer.

From time to time, we will have new looks become the Modern Typewriter design. Currently, we are working on a very special design made by one of our creativity directors. It is currently being worked on and customized. Be sure to see the new design when it is released!
